where to buy cubs spring training tickets

Major league baseball first came to Mesa for spring training in 1952, when the Cubs set up camp at Rendezvous Park. That park was razed in 1976, replaced by a new stadium at Hohokam Park. That facility, in turn, was demolished in 1996, and was replaced by a new and enlarged stadium and training facility which opened in February 1997.

The Chicago Cubs first expressed interest in training in Mesa as early as 1942, when a contingent of Cubs officials met with City officials to evaluate the ballpark and lodging facilities. But it was not until 1952 that the final decision was made for the Chicago Cubs to use Mesa as their spring training home. Six major league exhibition games were played in Mesa that season, against the Cleveland Indians, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, and crosstown rival Chicago White Sox.

Improvements were made to Rendezvous Park over the years, with the Cubs training at the site through 1965. After a three-year absence, spring training returned to Mesa when an agreement was reached with the Oakland As. Mesa was Oakland's spring training site for 10 years, including their three consecutive world championship seasons from 1972 to 1974.

Rendezvous Park finally fell victim to the wrecking ball in November 1976, replaced by the first stadium at Hohokam Park, dedicated in 1977. The As continued training at this new facility until 1979, at which time the Chicago Cubs relocated back to Mesa from Scottsdale. It was during the mid-1980s that the Cubs enjoyed unprecedented attendance, ranking as the Cactus Leagues largest draw, and at or near the top of all major league teams in spring training admissions.

Let me preface this with I love baseball. This post is meant to provide you with information for going to spring training, in Arizona, with a baby or a toddler. My husband and I are Chicago White Sox fans and we lived down the street from the White Sox stadium for nine years. So when we had our son we knew that he was going to be a baseball fan too! We took our son to his first baseball game when he was 3 months old and I was overwhelmed by the prospect of going. Once we got there he did great and everything went well!

Fast forward a year and a half and we were on our way to Phoenix, Arizona to attend spring training! Cactus League (Arizona) spring training is great for babies and toddlers for two reasons. First, unlike regular season stadiums, the Cactus League stadiums are smaller and thus easier to navigate; second, the stadiums typically have lawn seating where little kids can stretch their legs and run around.

The Cactus League started in 1947 when the Giants and Indians first set up spring training operations in the area. Unlike Florida Spring Training, all of the Cactus League stadiums are within an easy one hour drive of each other.

Are you a baseball fan and a music lover? During spring training check out Innings Festival at Tempe Beach Park in Tempe, Arizona on February 25 and 26, 2023. The 2023 musical lineup includes Eddie Vedder, Green Day, Weezer, The Black Crowes, The Offspring and many more.

One of the more memorable moments in Spring Training history occurred in 1918 when pitcher Babe Ruth was forced to play first base for the Boston Red Sox. He then went and hit two home runs, the second a record-breaking 573 feet; the ball ended up in a nearby pond at the Arkansas Alligator Farm and Petting Zoo. Over the years, famous athletes got their start in spring training in Hot Springs like Cy Young, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson.

Unfortunately, the Cactus League had to grow out of avoidance of racism. In 1947, Bill Veeck, owner of the minor-league Milwaukee Brewers was training in Florida when he sat in the segregated section of the ballpark. After chatting with some fans, he was instructed he had to leave by local law enforcement officers. They then called the mayor of Ocala, where the team was practicing. The mayor backed down after Veeck threatened to remove his team from Spring Training in Florida. The team was sold shortly thereafter for unrelated reasons. Veeck bought the Cleveland Indians and convinced the New York Giants to train in Phoenix. The Cactus League was thus formed. In 1947, Larry Doby became the second African-American MLB player and the first in the American League when he played for the Cleveland Indians.

Most Spring Training ballparks have a seating capacity of 10,000. They are built as a regular baseball field with seats behind home plate wrapping up to first and third bases. Spring Training games are designed to be more family-friendly with some stadiums allowing outside food and blankets to be used in the outfield, where tickets are sold as general admission. Overall, a Spring Training game is much cheaper than going to a regular game at Yankee Stadium or at Oracle Park.
