  • The Android developer community is huge, with their biggest feat being the ability to develop custom ROMs or custom Android builds. A custom ROM is an aftermarket firmware production based on the Android source code provided by Google. So if you are someone who wants to install a custom ROM on your device but are confused about which one to go with, read on as we bring the 15 best custom ROMs for Android in 2023.Best Custom ROMs for Android (Updated March 2023)The main reason why people prefer custom ROMs is that almost every company drops support for their devices after 2-3 years of their launch. A custom ROM, on the other hand, helps keep your device alive and updated with the latest version of Android. Another reason why people seek custom ROMs is because of the extra features they offer. They also reduce bloatware that comes as a part of many manufacturer skins. While there are many custom ROMs out there, not all of them are stable enough to be used as your daily driver.Installing a custom ROM requires you to unlock the bootloader first, and have a custom recovery like TWRP (website) installed. Make sure to always create a backup of your Android device before proceeding. While the download link for officially supported devices is mentioned below, some of these ROMs may have an unofficial port available for other devices as well. Also, on some ROMs, you may have to flash a GApps package such as OpenGapps (website) or NikGApps (website). I have personally tested almost all the ROMs listed below on my Redmi K20 Pro, Poco F1, and Mi A1. Also, if you like the custom ROM, consider donating the developer behind the work.Table of Contents Pixel Experience

1. Pixel ExperiencePixel Experience is the best custom ROM for Android right now and I can draw out three reasons for that. First, it supports a huge number of devices from Xiaomi to Realme to Asus to Samsung. Second, it brings Pixel features for non-pixel devices like the newer Google Assistant, built-in GCam support, Pixel live wallpapers, and more.

Pixel experience. Using it on my redmi 4x and runs lagfree and stable. Make sure to download the latest official build from pixel experience official site & not some unofficial build as those generally have some stability issues along with other things. Battery life has been great and hotspot works fine too.

Hey Team,I am having a Dell Tablet 8 3840 LTE. Since day 1 i am facing issues of slow down and pathetic android OS. Its presently working on 4.4.4..we bought it considering the specs but since day 1 its not performing. Please help me with suggesting the ROM and whether Root can solve the issue for me?

Once you've backed up all of your data, you'll need to download an Android factory image of the version you want to go back to, and it has to be specifically designed for your device. Google provides Pixel and Nexus users with a list of factory images. For other phone manufacturers, you'll have to find an official factory image for your device.

You'll also need to download and install the SDK Platform Tools to use the ADB and fastboot tools. You can check out our guide to ADB and fastboot to familiarize yourself with these. Lastly, you'll need to connect your phone to your PC via USB, so make sure to use the original USB cable. If you don't have the original, use a high-quality cable instead.

On your PC, navigate to the location where the SDK Platform Tools folder is saved and put the Android factory image you downloaded there. Factory images usually come in ZIP files that contain IMG files; unzip the factory image right there in the Platform Tools folder.

Some manufacturers will include a "flash-all" script as part of the downloaded factory image that will automatically flash everything for you. If this is the case, the script should be in the SDK Platform Tools folder along with the IMG files you extracted.

There are plenty of custom recovery tools to choose from, but the two most popular ones are TWRP and ClockworkMod (CWM). We recommend using one of the two as most devices are compatible with them. Visit the respective website and download the version that is compatible with your device.

If you've run into this situation, getting the Play Store up and running is trickier than just downloading and installing an APK file. Combined with the variables that can challenge you every step of the way, getting Google apps onto an Android device that doesn't include them can seem difficult.

Still, this is an easy way around the frustration that trying to get Google Play Services up and running can bring. If you'd rather avoid those headaches and can live with the shortcomings Amazon's platform brings, download the Appstore.

One more alternative app store is F-Droid. It's composed of open source games and applications, so its selection is relatively minimal. Unlike the Amazon Appstore, you won't find social apps like Twitter or Instagram. Still, it might have something specific you're looking for, like a FOSS fork of Telegram. You can browse F-Droid's library and download the app store from its official website.

If you only need a handful of apps, and automatic updates aren't super important, it might be possible to download the applications you need via APK Mirror. It's a repository of Android applications mirrored from the Google Play Store created by Android Police founder Artem Russakovskii. Keep in mind that most Google apps require Google Play Services and other framework APKs to function without an issue.

We also don't recommend installing paid apps using pirated or cracked APK downloads. You won't find these on APK Mirror, but these links are common across the rest of the web. In most cases, you're bound to set yourself up for trouble with malware or other dangerous files. Even if you aren't, we recommend supporting developers, especially because small, independent teams usually create a large portion of paid apps.

The first step in this process is enabling apps to be installed from unknown sources if the option exists on your device. This allows you to open and install applications from downloaded APK files, which is how you'll get the Google Play Store running. Check out the following steps to get started:

An app called Device Info HW does the job. It's available via the Google Play Store, but since you don't have that, you'll grab it from APKMirror. Go to the app's APKMirror page on your device, select the latest available version, and press the Download APK button. Once it's done downloading, open it to install the APK file.

The next step involves downloading the proper APK files for the Play Store. If you've ever installed Google software on an Amazon Fire Tablet, these steps should feel familiar. You'll install four applications: Google Account Manager, Google Services Framework, Google Play Services, and the Google Play Store. The first three apps handle essential account services and APIs, while the last app is the store.
