What is Tom Yum Goong?

Tom Yum Goong is a movie directed by Prachya Pinkaew, who also directed Jaa's previous breakout film Ong-Bak. As with Ong-Bak, the fights were choreographed by Jaa and his mentor, Panna Rittikrai. The movie was released in different countries under different titles, such as Warrior King in the UK, The Protector in the US, Thai Dragon in Spain, Revenge of the Warrior in Germany, and Honor of the Dragon in Russia. In India, it was named Haathi Mere Saathi (literally elephant, my partner), from a name of another Bollywood film starring Rajesh Khanna.

The plot of the movie

The movie follows Kham, a young man who was raised by his father in the jungle with elephants as members of their family. When his old elephant and its calf are stolen by poachers, Kham travels to Sydney, Australia, where he finds out that they are in the hands of Johnny, a Vietnamese gangster who runs a Thai restaurant called Tom Yum Goong. With the help of Mark, a Thai-Australian police officer, Kham fights his way through Johnny's henchmen and other obstacles to rescue his elephants.

The cast and crew of the movie

He also trained with real elephants for the movie. The movie also features Nathan Jones as T.K., Johnny's bodyguard and Kham's main rival; Xing Jin as Madame Rose, Johnny's boss and the leader of an international Thai mafia; Petchtai Wongkamlao as Mark, Kham's ally and comic relief; Bongkoj Khongmalai as Pla, a prostitute who helps Kham; Johnny Tri Nguyen as Johnny, Kham's enemy and Madame Rose's nephew; Lateef Crowder as a capoeira fighter; Jonathan Patrick Foo as a wushu fighter; Damian de Montemas as Vincent, a corrupt police inspector; David Asavanond as Rick, Mark's partner; Winai Poonpermpmpon as a fortune teller; Sotorn Rungruaeng as Kham's father; Amonphan Gongtragan as Goong; Nutdanai Kong as young Kham; Sambat the Elephant as Por Yai; and Yoyo Korn Singha as Kohrn.
